6 Tips to Prevent Tooth Decay

Tooth decay refers to the destruction of the tooth structure when the acids in your mouth dissolves the outer layers of your teeth. When food that contains carbohydrates, specifically sugar and starch are left on the teeth, they are digested by bacteria that lives in the mouth turning them into acids.
A mix of acids, saliva and any food debris present in your mouth combine and end up forming a plaque that clings to the teeth. The acids that results from these plaques dissolve the outer layer of your teeth, creating holes in the teeth called cavities. The following tips will help you prevent your teeth decay
1. Brushing your teeth properly after every meal.
This is the best way you can use to prevent tooth decay. Brushing your teeth helps in disrupting the formation of plaque in your teeth and brushing away the food particles that may be present around your teeth. You should always use a soft-bristle toothbrush and any accepted fluoride toothpaste. Take time to clean your teeth, at least two minutes.
2. Maintain a tooth healthy diet
Eating nutritious and balanced meals with limited carbohydrates will help strengthen the structure of your teeth. Avoid candy, cakes, chocolates, biscuits, chips, pretzels which can possibly remain on the tooth surface. You should always drink fluoridated water, which is effective in protecting the teeth.
3. Flossing your teeth at least once per day.
Flossing your teeth will remove the particles that may be present in between your teeth and under the gum line, which are points that the toothbrush cannot reach. You can use inter dental cleaners which are considered to be effective.
4. Visiting the dentist at least twice a year
Dentists perform oral examinations and offer professional tooth cleaning that will help prevent your tooth decay. They also advise on the use of supplemental fluoride that strengthens the teeth.
You can also ask them about dental sealants that are always applied on the molars to protect them from tooth decay.
5. Mouthwash
Mouthwash should not be performed after brushing the teeth, choose a different time such as after meals. Alcohol-free dental mouthwash that contains fluoride can be used to prevent tooth decay. You should not drink or eat anything for half an hour after a fluoride mouthwash
6. Chewing sugar free gums after meals
This will help to clean food particles that stick to the tooth. It also helps to strengthen and protect your teeth and gums.
Generally, the teeth are one of the first things anyone will notice about you. All the above listed tips will keep your teeth white, shiny, healthy which will help you to gain a much better impression of your character to the public.
